In small towns and among urban masses across Canada, pregnancy care centres provide a safe, accepting place for a woman to turn to when facing an unplanned pregnancy. Tucked into the margins of our cultural space, these centres work quietly but faithfully to impact the lives of women and their babies. Pregnancy care centres are life affirming, women affirming and their clients are loved and accepted regardless of how their pregnancy ends. A woman is not vilified as one who must be forcibly stopped by law from ending her baby’s life. Rather, she is recognized as the product of the culture in which she lives, a culture that is misled and no longer recognizes any of the Divine image in humanity. It is a culture that largely regards unborn children as a “pregnancy tissue’ or “products of conception” so that once the uterus is “emptied,” it will almost be as if a growing human child never existed.

Studies show that post-abortive women know abortion is no eraser for the past. That is why the ministry of pregnancy centres is so crucial. Through skilled counseling and engaging in relationship with emotionally and spiritually wounded women, pregnancy care centres provide a much needed ministry in their communities. They have been able to help many women through difficult circumstances with unplanned pregnancies, but not all. Many may not even know that a pregnancy centre can help them and feel they have no choices. As a result, the cycle of hurt continues with the guilt and pain of post abortion stress. And hidden inside the opaque walls of their mother’s wombs, their babies have no hope for a chance at life.

The “call” to share truth and love is the mission of each CAPSS affiliated pregnancy centre across our nation and why we believe these centres should be adequately supported.

CAPSS is committed to increasing the impact pregnancy centres have in their ministry to abortion-vulnerable women, by providing leadership and mentoring to pregnancy centres, empowering them to build capacity for serving women and their babies more effectively and to restoring a life affirming culture in our country.
