LEADER MENTORSHIP PROJECT
CAPSS mandate is “Encouraging Leading Excellence” at each level of our centres’ development. Crisis pregnancy centres have a significant impact, both physically and spiritually, in the lives of their clients. We know that directors, staff and board members need excellent support and resources in order to do their best for each client that walks through the doors. One of the new tools we have developed this year is a “Dashboard” program to assist centres in doing a self-assessment of the vital areas of their ministry. Some of these areas would focus around managing resources, fundraising, governance, training volunteers, marketing and evaluating outcomes.
We have found the centres that receive ongoing coaching, are the ones that are making great strides reaching more vulnerable women and providing better support to clients. Thoroughly training and developing staff, volunteers and board members, as well as effective marketing are some of the essentials that CAPSS can assist centres with and the reason why we have designed tools to assist them such as our “Dashboard” program, which is further explained on the following page.
Many centres that would really benefit from coaching are struggling financially and cannot afford a consultant’s visit or even to attend our national conference for encouragement and support. CAPSS would like to offer “Coaching Grants” to help them increase their effectiveness by strategically working with them over a 12 month period. With this grant, a CAPSS consultant would come alongside the director and board of a struggling centre and coach them into operating at the next level. We want to offer practical tools and encouraging environments to assist the Director to “go the distance” and learn to lead with excellence.
* A commitment of $10,000 per Centre
DASHBOARD PROJECT: Your partnership in the dashboard project will:
• will help Increase client numbers • positively effect client care More effective care of clients • increase capacity volunteers / staff • strengthen the infrastructure for financial solvency • increase board and staff effectiveness.
The Dashboard project will assist CPC directors and board members to assess the vital signs of their organization and prioritize their plan for success. This project will have a far-reaching impact on the future health of centres across Canada.
The Dashboard has about a dozen gauges designed to measure the strength of a centre’s infrastructure. The purpose of such a gauge is to prevent the organization from landing in the “red zone” in critical areas for operation. With our help, centres will be able to monitor their work in an effective and somewhat objective manner and then easily prioritize the areas that need improvement. That’s where our consulting team comes in to assist
* A commitment of $10,000.
TESTIMONIAL
One of the great challenges in non-profit organizations whether they are a Crisis Pregnancy Centre (CPC) or any other ministry, is leadership. As goes the leadership so goes the work. When the leadership fails, the mandate of group gets lost in busy and often futile work. CAPSS is committed to helping reach women in crisis and saving babies through the primary strategy of working to make CPC leadership effective, both the executive directors and board of directors. When these individuals pay attention to the fundamental issues of leadership we see thriving healthy Centres reaching more women and children in their local communities. I would like to tell you one of the success stories of CAPSS at work in a local centre. A well-established Centre of fourteen years with a founding Director had a change of leadership at both the Executive Director position and Board level and there began a three-year decline. Every measurable aspect of the ministry was loosing ground. When the second ED left her role the Board of Directors reached out to CAPSS for help. CAPSS was able to recommend a new ED who had been involved in a practicum in another Centre. CAPSS came in and did a Board consult and provided ongoing mentoring to the new ED. Within six months of starting in her role the new ED was involved in a week long training for New Directors sponsored by CAPSS that helps emerging leaders grasp the importance of the fundamentals of CPC leadership. Within a year this new ED and her newly inspired and trained board had taken a failing centre and turned it completely around. On every measurable level the Centre was back on track and growing in effectiveness. They had increasing client numbers, more effective care of clients, increasing number of volunteers, staff and financial solvency. CAPSS is developing a “Dash Board” tool to be used by CPC leadership teams across the nation. This tool will help centres recognize early when they are getting in trouble and what they need to focus on. This will then help them access the consulting available to them through CAPSS. I’ve seen this system at work and know that across the country there are Centres that need this help. An investment at the national level in this project will pay great dividends across the nation in communities where women and children are being devastated by abortion. TRAIN & DEVELOP FIELD CONSULTANTS: Developing consultants for the various provinces across Canada under the leadership of our Director of Training and Development is a growing need. We know that effective mentoring/ coaching takes time and resources to reach the many centres across this vast country.
Having provincial consultants will make a significant difference in the leadership and success of many centres. This year we hope to train 3-4 new consultants to take their leadership skills and CPC experience out on the field to help other centres.
Developing consultants requires a week of classroom training and then one or two experiences “shadowing” a seasoned consultant. The training week and shadowing opportunity would cost approximately $2,500 per trainee, plus our staff expenses.
*A commitment of $10,000 per regional Consultant
Julia came to her local PCC as a result of the encouragement from her youth pastor for post abortive help. Her journey to healing wasn’t easy, in the midst of her journey she found herself dealing with another unplanned pregnancy but with the help of those that cared and pointed her to Christ, she carried her son to term and received healing from her abortion. As her parents watched her journey of great suffering and then saw her find healing and forgiveness, their hearts were also turned towards the healer and they now enjoy a family life where Christ is the focus and their grandson is their great joy. Both Julia and her father became actively involved as volunteers at their local PCC.

REGIONAL INITIATIVES:
CAPSS is looking for investors to support regional initiatives across Canada. Current opportunities would focus on the unique needs in the Greater Toronto Area, Atlantic Canada and the Maritimes. Support for a current initiative in Quebec has shown the need for such regional initiatives.
Quebec:
Due to designated funding this year, CAPSS was empowered to focus on further development and training in Quebec. Quebec has some special needs that are dictated by the uniqueness of the French Canadian culture which are reflected in their language, their laws and their values.
French Canadian culture is more than 86% “Catholic”, but mainly out of tradition rather than true religion” Nominal” Catholics no longer subscribe to many of the church doctrines, significantly those concerning sexuality. Attitudes towards pornography, homosexuality and casual sex, etc. are “avant garde.”
According to Stats Canada, Quebec has the highest rates of suicide, abortion, child poverty, pornography, births outside of marriage (55 %) alcohol addiction and divorce in North America. Their birth rate is the lowest.
Tolerance is the big buzzword in this postmodern world. However this province has the tendency to tolerate every lifestyle and all spirituality except for God and Christianity. Some would go as far as saying we’re living in an “anti Christian” environment.
We wish to serve Quebec in such a way as to meet them in their uniqueness therefore we are training up a team of servant leaders that can assist in mentoring those interested in the Pregnancy Centre ministry in Quebec. We have translators available to translate manuals, forms and other necessary tools to assist them in meeting the client needs. Translation is expensive and time consuming. If this is an area of interest for you we would appreciate your support.
As of 2002, only one Pregnancy Centre existed in the province of Quebec. By 2004, two more have opened. CAPSS is working with a team to establish and equip more Centres throughout this province. This work is always “ground breaking.” Is this a mission field that tugs at your heart?
Leadership development for Quebec will have a great impact on this province. We plan to have 3 new people trained for Quebec this year.
